BREAKING: NLC Nullifies Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party

 

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has invalidated the reinstatement of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party and his National Working Committee, following a national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra state. In a communiqué issued after the NLC Political Commission Stakeholders meeting in Abuja, the Congress expressed a vote of no confidence in the purported convention and the leadership that emerged from it.

The communiqué, disseminated to the press in Abuja, was endorsed by key figures including Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, Mr Abdulwahed Omar, former President of the NLC, and Mr S.O.Z. Ejiofor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Labour Party, among others.

According to the communiqué, the NLC endorsed the formation of a Transition Committee under the aegis of the NLC Political Commission to oversee the affairs of the party temporarily. The stakeholders resolved that the transition committee should manage the party's affairs until the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention.

The stakeholders also stipulated that once constituted, the transition committee should assume control of the party's secretariats nationwide. They further mandated the committee to initiate an assets recovery process for all Labour Party properties and to audit cases of fraud, impersonation, and forgery involving former party officials. Per the demands of Mr Peter Obi, the leader of the Labour Party, the stakeholders insisted on diligent prosecution of those implicated in wrongdoing.

Expressing disappointment in the conduct of a few discredited former officers, the stakeholders emphasized the urgency for the transition committee to organize an inclusive national convention within three months of its establishment. This process, they explained, would commence with ward congresses, progress to local government and state congresses, and culminate in a comprehensive National Convention in Abuja.

Furthermore, the stakeholders tasked the Transition Committee with the revalidation of current party members and the registration of new members through the issuance of new membership cards and collection of membership dues. They anticipated this mobilization effort would increase the party's membership to 10 million.

In light of the communiqué, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies were notified of the developments in the Labour Party. The stakeholders called for official communication to INEC and others to recognize the Transition Committee as the interim leadership of the Labour Party.

Finally, the stakeholders reaffirmed that the Labour Party is inclusive and welcomes all Nigerians irrespective of their background, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic status.
