The Federal Government has declared Friday 21st and Monday 24th of April 2023, as Public holidays to mark this year’s Eid el-Fitr Celebration.
This was made known in a
statement signed and released by Shuiab Belgore, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry
of Interior. The PS reported that the Minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, made
the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
You will recall that Muslims all over the world start fasting as usual in the month of Ramadan on
23 March, the fasting period is expected to last 29 or 30 days, the 29th
day falls on Thursday 20 April 2023 and if the count reaches 30 this year’s Ramadan
shall ends on Friday the 21 April 2023.
Eid el-Fitr is one of two major
holidays celebrated by Muslims around the world. It can be translated as
"the feast of fast-breaking" as it commemorates the end of the holy
month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the Ninth month of the Islamic calendar, as cited
from the Holy Qur’an: Surah Baqarah Ayah 183. "O' you who have Faith!
Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so
that you may guard yourselves (against evil)." Furthermore, Ayah 185 –
reads, “The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance
for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion”. As one of the five
pillars, or duties, of Islam, fasting during the month of Ramadan is mandatory
for all healthy adult Muslims. Children who have not reached puberty, the
elderly, those who are physically or mentally incapable of fasting, pregnant
women, breastfeeding mothers and travellers are exempt.
However, in the press release the
Interior Minister, congratulated all Muslims for the successful completion of
Ramadan, and encourage them to emulate the
virtues of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, self-discipline, sacrifice and
good neighbourliness, as demonstrated by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be
upon Him).
The minister further stressed that “the self-restraint, self-denial, sacrifice and deep spiritual consciousness
that accompanied the fasting period should not end, but be sustained and
improved upon, in order to be a better person and true worshipper”.
Also, Aregbesola assured that
President Muhammadu Buhari is fully committed to a peaceful transition of
government following successful elections. And assured that the government is committed
to the provision of the safety of lives and properties of every citizen and
foreigner in the country.
In his conclusion, “he urges
Nigerians to be part of the nation’s security architecture by being vigilant
and reporting suspicious individuals and activities to law enforcement agencies
nearest to them, noting that security is everybody’s responsibility. He
admonishes Nigerians also to report suspicious activities and persons to the
N-Alert application”.
