Depression
is a psychological disturbance of the mind. It is a serious health issue and
if not well taken care of can leads to further health challenges and can even
lead to an untimely death.
According to the World Health Organisation, WHO, ”depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide ad is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease”.
More
especially, depression is the feeling of sadness, loss, lowliness, loss of
interest, anger - all of which can interfere with your mood. When you are
emotionally depressed you may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities,
and sometimes you feel as if life isn’t worth living.
Because
the way things are one may experience depression once in a lifetime, while some had
depression often due to their low level of income, low standard of living, the lifestyle they anticipate or family background or disturbance from dependents, etc. Generally, depression
occurs base on the effect of emotional disturbances in one’s mind.
How
then do you understand or identify when or who is depressed?
Depression
usually comes along with one or more of the following:
i.
Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
ii.
Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small
matters
iii. Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities,
such as sex, hobbies, or sports.
iv.
Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much.
v.
Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra
effort.
vi.
Reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food
and weight gain.
vii.
Anxiety, agitation, or restlessness.
viii.
Slowed thinking, speaking, or body movements.
ix.
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or
self-blame.
x. Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions, and remembering
things.
xi. Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts,
suicide attempts, or suicide.
xii.
Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches.
